Peri Is More Than Hot Flashes

When I started having peri symptoms, hot flashes were not the first thing on the list. Most people think that hot flashes and night sweats are the only sign that you are in perimenopause, but they are wrong! I started with anxiety, insomnia and intolerance to alcohol, and hot flashes didn't come until later. A recent study highlights that for many women, the experience goes far beyond hot flashes as a symptom of perimenopause.

A survey conducted with 200 women aged 45 to 55 revealed a range of distressing symptoms that many experience during perimenopause. While hot flashes and night sweats are certainly part of the picture, other symptoms can be just as challenging. Here are some of the most frequently reported issues:

  • Forgetfulness: Many women noted difficulties with memory and concentration, often describing it as a frustrating part of their daily lives.

  • Lack of Energy: A common complaint was feeling unusually fatigued, making it harder to engage in everyday activities.

The Role of HRT/MHT

Interestingly, the study found that current use of hormone replacement therapy (HRT)/menopause hormone therapy (MHT) played a role in both symptom occurrence and the level of distress associated with those symptoms. This suggests that HRT/MHT may provide relief for some women, but the relationship between HRT/MHT and perimenopausal symptoms warrants further investigation. I hear from many women that their symptoms have improved dramatically after starting HRT/MHT, you just need to find what is right for you and your body!
